The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination every year to select candidates for the posts of Geologist, Geophysicist, Chemist, and Junior Hydrogeologist in the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB). Education Qualification:

  • The candidate must have a Master’s degree in Geology/Applied Geology/Marine Geology/Geo-exploration/Earth Science and Resource Management/Hydrogeology or a Master’s degree in Physics/Mathematics with a specialization in Geophysics or a Master’s degree in Chemistry or a Master’s degree in Geology/Applied Geology with Hydrogeology as one of the subjects from a recognized university or institution.

Age Limit(as on 01-01-2024):

  • Min. 21 years and Max. 32 years (Check the official notification below for age relaxation).




Selection Procedure:

  • The UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist Examination 2024 will be held in two phases: Preliminary and Main. The Preliminary exam will be conducted on February 18, 2024, and will consist of two objective-type papers of 200 marks each. The papers will cover the subjects of General Studies and Geology/Geophysics/Chemistry/Hydrogeology as per the candidate’s choice. The duration of each paper will be two hours. The candidates who qualify for the Preliminary exam will be eligible to appear for the Main exam.
  • The Main exam will be conducted on June 22, 2024, and will consist of three descriptive-type papers of 200 marks each. The papers will cover the subjects of Geology/Geophysics/Chemistry/Hydrogeology as per the candidate’s choice. The duration of each paper will be three hours. The candidates who qualify for the Main exam will be called for the Personality Test, which will carry 200 marks

Application Fee:

  • Candidates (excepting Female/SC/ST/PwBD who are exempted from payment of fee) are required to pay a fee of Rs. 200/- (Rupees Two Hundred only) either by remitting the money in any Branch of State Bank of India or by using Visa/Master/RuPay Credit/Debit Card/UPI Payment or by using Internet Banking of any Bank.
