National Mathematics Day 2022:

On December 22, the country as a whole observes National Mathematics Day. Srinivasa Ramanujan’s contributions are recognized and honored on National Mathematics Day. On this day in 1887, Srinivasa Ramanujan, an Indian mathematician, was born. The nation commemorates Ramanujan’s 135th birthday this year. Making people aware of the evolution of mathematics and its significance in the advancement of humanity is the primary goal of National Mathematics Day celebrations.

The history behind National Mathematics Day:

Dr. Manmohan Singh, who was the prime minister at the time, declared the day on February 26, 2012, to commemorate the 125th birthday of Srinivasa Ramanujan, an Indian mathematician (22 December 1887–26 April 1920). Additionally, 2012 was recognized as the National Mathematics Year. Ramanujan had a multitude of concepts that changed and redefined mathematics in the 20th century. The mathematics of the twenty-first century is still influenced by these concepts.

Important details about Srinivasa Ramanujan’s life and work:

  • On December 22, 1887, Srinivasa Ramanujan was born into a Brahmin Iyengar family in Erode, Tamil Nadu. He had a natural aptitude for arithmetic and had mastered trigonometry by the age of 12, making him a candidate for a scholarship at the Government Arts College in Kumbakonam.
  • In 1903, he attended the Kumbakonam Government College for his studies. He failed exams in non-mathematical courses because he detested them. At the age of 14, he joined Pachaiyappa College in Madras.
  • Ramanujan began working as a clerk for the Madras Port Trust in 1912. Some of his coworkers there recognized his mathematical prowess, and one of them recommended that he contact Professor GH Hardy of Trinity College, Cambridge University. After meeting Hardy in 1913, he enrolled at Trinity College.
  • Ramanujan earned a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in 1916. With Hardy’s assistance, he later published several papers on his topic. They even worked together on a number of cooperative ventures.
  • In 1917, Ramanujan was chosen to join the London Mathematical Society. In recognition of his work on elliptic functions and number theory, he was elected to the prestigious Royal Society the following year. Additionally, he was the first Indian to be chosen as a fellow of Trinity College.
  • Ramanujan had no formal experience in pure mathematics, but throughout his brief life, he had a significant impact on the field. Infinite series, ongoing fractions, number theory, and mathematical analysis are some of his research specialties.
  • In addition, he made important contributions to the theory of divergent series, the elliptic integrals, the Riemann series, the hypergeometric series, and the functional equations of the zeta function. He is believed to have independently gathered 3,900 results and developed his own theorems.
